The Importance of Aqiqah in Islam

Aqiqah is a Sunnah practice of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and a meaningful way to seek Allah’s blessings and protection for your child. In addition to the sacrifice, several recommended supplications from the Qur’an and Sunnah enhance the spiritual significance of this occasion:

Dua for a Righteous Child

“My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.”

(Surah As-Saffat 37:100)

Dua for Protection from Shaytan and Evil

“I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)

Dua for Blessings and Guidance

“May Allah bless you with His gift to you, and may you be grateful to the Giver. May the child reach maturity, and may you be granted its righteousness.”

(Ibn Majah 1894)

Dua for Righteous Offspring

“Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.”

(Surah Al-Furqan 25:74)

How many Aqiqah animals should be performed?

The number of animals for Aqiqah is based on the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

  1. For a boy: Two sheep/goats
  2. For a girl: One sheep/goat

This is based on the Hadith:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"For the boy, two sheep should be slaughtered, and for the girl, one."

(Sunan Abu Dawood 2838, Sahih by Al-Albani)

Golden Ruling of Islam:

Yes, that aligns with the principle of ease in Islam. The golden ruling in Islam is that obligations and recommended acts should not be a burden on believers. If someone cannot afford two animals for a boy’s Aqiqah, offering one is perfectly acceptable.

This principle is based on the Qur'an:

لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
"Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear."

 (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286)

This demonstrates Islam’s emphasis on compassion, flexibility, and ease in worship. The Aqiqah is a Sunnah, and while it is highly recommended, it should be done within one’s means.

The Sunnah Practices for a Newborn

In Islam, there are several Sunnah (Prophetic traditions) to follow when a baby is born. These practices are based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and are meant to welcome the child with blessings and gratitude. Here are the main Sunnah acts:

1. Tahneek (First Taste)
  • It is Sunnah to soften a small piece of date and rub it on the baby’s gums. If dates are unavailable, honey can be used.
  • This was done by the Prophet ﷺ to bless the child.

2. Adhan and Iqamah

  • The father (or a trusted person) should recite the Adhan (call to prayer) in the baby’s right ear and the Iqamah (call before prayer) in the left ear.
  • This is a way of introducing the child to the oneness of Allah.

3. Naming the Child

  • It is recommended to give the child a good, meaningful name.
  • The Prophet ﷺ encouraged naming children after the Prophets, righteous people, or names that have good meanings.
  • The best names are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman.

4. Aqiqah (Sacrificial Offering)

  • On the 7th day (or later if not possible), an Aqiqah is performed:
  • Two sheep for a boy.
  • One sheep for a girl.
  • The meat can be distributed among family, friends, and the poor.

5. Shaving the Baby’s Head

  • The baby’s hair is shaved on the 7th day.
  • The hair should be weighed, and an equivalent amount in silver should be given to charity.

6. Circumcision (Khatnah)

  • It is recommended for boys to be circumcised, ideally on the 7th day or later.

7. Dua and Seeking Protection

  • It is Sunnah to recite the following supplications for protection:
  • For a boy:
"Barakallahu laka fīhi, wa ja‘alahu barran taqiyyan wa anbatahu fi al-Islami nabātan hasanan."
(May Allah bless him for you, make him righteous and pious, and cause him to grow well in Islam.)
  • For both genders:
"U'idhukumā bi kalimātillāhi at-tāmmati min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli 'aynin lāmmah."
(I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and poisonous thing, and from every evil eye.)
    (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)

These Sunnah practices bring blessings and protection to the newborn while fulfilling the guidance of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Who Should Perform Aqiqah?

Aqiqah is a Sunnah act of gratitude to Allah swt for the blessing of a child. It is ideally performed by the parents, particularly the father. However, if the parents are unable, a guardian, relative, or well-wisher can do it on behalf of the child.

According to the majority of scholars, every adult Muslim who is eligible to pay Zakat, or who has enough financial means at the time of the newborn’s birth, should perform Aqiqah. A healthy animal (sheep or goat) counts as one Aqiqah.

Who Can Perform Aqiqah?

  1. Parents – The father is primarily responsible, but the mother can also arrange it if needed.
  2. Grandparents or Relatives – If parents are unable, close family members can perform it.
  3. Anyone on Behalf of the Child – If Aqiqah was not done in infancy, an adult may perform their own Aqiqah later in life.

While Aqiqah is recommended on the 7th day after birth, if it cannot be done then, it can be performed later when financially possible.

Islam encourages ease and flexibility in worship, so those who cannot afford it are not burdened.

"So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]."

(Surah Al-Kawthar 108:2)

"We cant help everyone but everyone can help someone"
